In a surprising turn of events, the Memphis Grizzlies have decided to bench rookie sensation Zach Edey for the remainder of the NBA Summer League. This decision comes on the heels of Zach Edey’s ankle injury, which he sustained during a recent game. Edey, the towering 7-foot-4 center and No. 9 pick from the 2024 Draft, will no longer be showcasing his talents this summer.
Zach Edey’s Ankle Injury Ends Summer League Run Early
Edey, who was expected to dazzle and demonstrate why he was a top draft pick, will no longer be seen on the court this summer. The injury occurred during Thursday’s matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans, where Edey’s awkward landing left him hobbling off the floor. Damichael Cole of the Commercial Appeal confirmed the news, noting that the Grizzlies are also sidelining Cam Spencer due to similar issues.
“The Grizzlies are shutting down Cam Spencer and Zach Edey for the rest of the summer league due to ankle sprains. Nothing too alarming, but no more Edey/Spencer in Las Vegas,” Cole tweeted.
Edey’s debut in the Summer League was nothing short of explosive. His performance against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City was a spectacle, where he scored 14 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, and blocked four shots. A highlight of that game was a dramatic tip-in with just 0.2 seconds remaining to force overtime. It was a display of sheer talent and tenacity, a testament to why he was a top draft pick.
However, even the best can falter. Edey’s promising start was marred by an ankle tweak in that initial game. Although he played through the discomfort, it sidelined him for the next five games. When he returned on Thursday, Edey was quick to make an impact, scoring six points on a perfect shooting performance and contributing defensively with a block and three rebounds. But his injury flared up again when he landed awkwardly while attempting a block, forcing him to sit out the remainder of the game.
In his brief stint in the Summer League, Edey accumulated 42 minutes of play, totaling 20 points, 18 rebounds, and five blocks. While it’s disheartening for fans to see such a promising talent cut short, the Grizzlies are prioritizing Edey’s long-term health over summer league success. The team is hopeful that Edey will be fully recovered and ready to make a strong impression at training camp.
