The plot thickens for the Morris brothers as they contemplate a reunion. Just days ago, the New York Knicks made waves by waiving veteran forward Marcus Morris, a decision rooted in the team’s need to accommodate superstar Karl-Anthony Towns, whom they snagged in a headline-grabbing trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Although Morris was initially signed to a training camp contract, it appears the Knicks had hoped to welcome him back. However, that sentiment was not reciprocated.
Will Marcus Morris Find a New Home Before Training Camp?
According to insights from The Athletic’s James L. Edwards III, Morris decided against rejoining the team for training camp after his recent release, citing financial constraints stemming from the Towns deal.
Despite the setback, Morris remains a valuable asset for any playoff contender. At 35, he showcased his skills during a brief tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers last season, particularly in the high-pressure environment of the playoffs. Though he found himself without a team until just a few weeks ago, the impending start of training camp could pose a challenge for him in securing a new home.
Interestingly, his twin brother, Markieff Morris, recently re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks and has expressed a strong desire to play alongside Marcus in Dallas. Yet, the Mavericks had all summer to recruit him and chose not to, raising doubts about this dream reunion. However, with Marcus now a free agent, the opportunity still exists for the Morris brothers to join forces.
Whether or not Marcus Morris returns to the Knicks, the team enters the 2024-25 season with their eyes set firmly on the championship. Last season, the Knicks finished with a commendable 50-32 record despite a slew of injuries, earning the coveted No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Their offseason acquisitions, including Towns and Mikal Bridges, have solidified their status as frontrunners for the Eastern Conference title.
Nevertheless, the road to glory won’t be easy. The reigning champion Boston Celtics and a revamped Philadelphia 76ers stand as formidable obstacles. Still, the Knicks are poised to make a significant impact, building on their success from the previous season.
