ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Warriors are set to add Terry Stotts as the top assistant coach under Steve Kerr, while also bringing aboard Jerry Stackhouse as an assistant coach. While preparing for the 2024-25 NBA season, the Golden State Warriors are not only adding new players to their roster but also improving their coaching staff.
A New Lead Assistant
The hunt for a new lead assistant started when Kenny Atkinson, who was the Warriors’ previous top assistant, accepted the position as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Atkinson’s exit comes after spending three seasons with Golden State, where he had a significant impact on their coaching approach. Moreover, the Warriors have witnessed Mike Brown and Jama Mahlalela, who are also assistant coaches, depart for new chances and have experienced the unfortunate death of Dejan Milojević.
Terry Stotts’ Coaching Experience
Terry Stotts comes to the Warriors’ bench with a lot of experience. Having already coached three teams, Stotts has experience leading the Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Portland Trail Blazers. While with the Blazers, he coached NBA superstar Damian Lillard and led the team to numerous playoff appearances. Most recently, Stotts worked as an assistant coach for the Bucks under Adrian Griffin.
Jerry Stackhouse’s Diverse Background
After playing in the NBA for 18 years, Jerry Stackhouse switched to coaching with an impressive list of accomplishments. He began his career with the Toronto Raptors and has worked in different positions, including with the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto’s G League team. Stackhouse most recently served as the head coach for the Vanderbilt Commodores in the NCAA. His skills in developing players and his experience will be a great advantage for the Warriors.
Looking Ahead
The Warriors needed a change in coaching, and these new additions signal the start of that shift. Due to Terry Stotts broad head-coaching background and Stackhouse’s varied coaching experience, the Warriors’ coaching staff is ready to introduce new viewpoints and tactics to the team. Fans can anticipate an exciting and competitive 2024-25 season as Golden State adds to their roster and coaching staff.
