Critics have often pointed out Tyrese Haliburton’s unorthodox shooting form, but his performance on the court speaks for itself. The Indiana Pacers’ point guard has become one of the league’s emerging stars, particularly on the offensive end.
Vernon Maxwell on Tyrese Haliburton’s Unorthodox Shooting Form
Former NBA guard Vernon Maxwell, while acknowledging Haliburton’s unusual shooting technique, has recognized his excellence. He mentioned that Haliburton might have one of the most unorthodox shooting forms he’s seen but stressed that he is undoubtedly an All-Star, and his statistics support that claim.
Despite his distinct shooting style, Haliburton’s efficiency remains remarkable, with a consistent shooting percentage beyond 40% from beyond the arc. His journey to stardom has been impressive, especially since joining the Indiana Pacers from the Sacramento Kings. This transition allowed him to represent Team USA in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, where he excelled as one of the team’s standout players.
Beyond his shooting skills, Haliburton has established himself as one of the league’s premier playmakers, averaging 10.4 assists per game last season, a close second to James Harden’s 10.7 had he been eligible (Haliburton played just 56 games).
In the early stages of the 2023-24 season, Haliburton is leading the league with an average of 12.3 assists per game.
His contributions have significantly raised the prospects of the Indiana Pacers as one of the NBA’s most promising young teams. While their ability to translate this potential into wins remains to be seen, their first two victories of the current season by an average margin of 17.5 points per game have generated optimism.
Notably, Tyrese Haliburton’s unique shooting form hasn’t hindered his impressive three-point shooting, as he has consistently maintained a shooting percentage of over 40% beyond the arc during his initial three seasons in the league. Consequently, despite critics’ reservations, there is little reason to tamper with his shot form.
In fact, even NBA coaching greats like Steve Kerr have advised against altering his shooting form, given his exceptional accuracy from long range. So, while some may find Haliburton’s shooting technique unconventional, it has undoubtedly not held him back from achieving excellence on the court.
