In a strategic move that adds experience to their roster, the Utah Jazz have secured the services of veteran point guard Patty Mills on a one-year contract, as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski. The deal, valued at $3.3 million, is fully guaranteed, ensuring Mills will be with the team for the upcoming season.

Mills, now 36, is coming off an impressive stint representing Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he averaged 16.5 points per game. His performance was highlighted by a dramatic buzzer-beater that pushed Australia into overtime during their quarterfinal clash with Serbia, though they ultimately fell to Nikola Jokic and his Serbian squad.

Originally drafted in the second round by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2009, Mills is set to embark on his 16th season in the NBA, marking his journey through six franchises. His career highlights include a championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014. Beyond his NBA tenure, Mills has also showcased his skills internationally, playing in China and his homeland, Australia.

The upcoming season presents some uncertainty regarding Mills’ role within the Jazz lineup. Last season, he only made 32 appearances split between the Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat, raising questions about his current form and potential impact. However, the fully guaranteed contract indicates that the Jazz see value in his presence, whether as a rotational player or as a veteran mentor guiding the younger members of the team.

Utah’s backcourt is currently brimming with talent, making Mills’ exact role even more intriguing. Last year’s first-round pick, Keyonte George, is expected to take the starting point guard role alongside Collin Sexton, with Jordan Clarkson solidifying his position as the sixth man. The depth chart also features Isaiah Collier, the No. 29 overall pick, as well as recent signings Johnny Juzang and Svi Mykhailiuk.

The Jazz are coming off a disappointing 31-51 season, and despite a busy offseason, they seem to be in a state of flux. While they have extended Lauri Markkanen and retained much of their core roster, questions remain about their ability to compete in the fiercely competitive Western Conference. With Patty Mills’ addition, the Jazz may be banking on his experience to help navigate this transitional period.
