Indiana Pacers’ emerging superstar Tyrese Haliburton recently gave fans an intimate look into his life during a sit-down with GQ Sports. In a video released on July 24, the two-time NBA All-Star discussed a range of personal topics, from his favorite shoes and gaming setup to the jewelry he cherishes. Among the ten non-negotiable items he shared, Haliburton’s candid reflections on his personal growth and faith stood out, offering a unique perspective on the young athlete’s journey.

At just 24 years old, Haliburton has already made a significant impact in the NBA. However, his focus isn’t solely on basketball. Over the past couple of years, he has developed a profound appreciation for the Bible, which he describes as his source of peace in a tumultuous world driven by social media.

“My first essential would be the Bible,” Haliburton revealed early in the video (0:10). “Over the last two years, my religion has become very important in my life. Just understanding that I’m made in the image of God in a world where you have bad games and they are killing you on social media or confidence goes up and down, I can always come right here. This is my peace. Just understanding that I’m made in his image and he’s the only one who can really judge me,” he continued.

The NBA star’s openness about his faith offers a refreshing look at how young athletes navigate the pressures of their careers. In an era where social media can both elevate and dismantle reputations overnight, Haliburton’s reliance on his religious beliefs provides a grounding force. He shared that one particular Bible verse, Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” resonates deeply with him. This verse, a favorite among many, has gained new significance for Haliburton as he has delved deeper into the Bible over the past two years.

Currently, Haliburton is with Team USA, preparing for the 2024 Paris Olympics. His back-to-back stellar seasons with the Pacers earned him a coveted spot on the roster for the upcoming quadrennial competition. Haliburton’s inclusion in Team USA is a testament to his rapid rise and exceptional skills on the court. However, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. He led Indiana to the Eastern Conference finals but had to miss crucial games due to a left hamstring injury. His absence was keenly felt as the Pacers were swept by the Boston Celtics.

“Growing up, the verse that everybody got tattooed on was Philippians 4:13, ‘I can do all through Christ who strengthens me,’ and I always believed in that, but I never read the Bible, so it’s been important to me the last two years,” Haliburton said.

Haliburton’s career began with the Sacramento Kings, where he quickly made a name for himself. After three years in the Western Conference, he was traded to the Pacers in 2022 and has since become the cornerstone of the franchise. His move to Indiana marked a significant turning point, not only professionally but personally, as he embraced new routines and traditions that have enriched his life.

One such tradition is attending chapel before every NBA game. Haliburton spoke about this practice and its significance. He shared how veteran player Harrison Barnes introduced him to the pre-game chapel services during his time with the Kings, a habit he continued with teammate Buddy Hield after his trade to the Pacers.

“I didn’t go to church or anything like that growing up,” Haliburton admitted. “So when I got to the NBA, they do chapel before every game. So when sixties on the clock, there’s always a meeting where both teams, coaches, everybody’s welcome to come in and do a 15-minute service. Harrison Barnes was my vet, and so I always used to go with him. And then when I got traded, I started going with Buddy (Hield), and now Buddy’s gone. So it is really just me most of the time and it’s been really good for me,” he added.

Despite his rapid ascent in the NBA, Haliburton remains grounded, understanding the importance of personal growth and spiritual well-being. As he gears up for the Olympics, he is aware that his minutes on the court may be limited. In the five exhibition games leading up to the Olympics, Haliburton saw his playing time decrease, even sitting out entirely in Team USA’s final showcase game against Germany. Nonetheless, the experience promises to be a valuable learning curve, providing Haliburton with the exposure and experience necessary to further his career.

In the fast-paced world of professional sports, where the spotlight can be both a blessing and a curse, Tyrese Haliburton’s story is a testament to the importance of finding balance. His journey illustrates how personal faith and professional ambition can coexist, guiding an athlete through the highs and lows of their career. As Haliburton continues to make his mark in the NBA and beyond, his reflections serve as an inspiration to many, highlighting the power of faith and perseverance in the face of adversity.
