Stephen Curry has once again proven his mettle as one of the top players globally, coming off a spectacular performance with Team USA in their recent Olympic gold medal victory. His clutch shooting and seamless collaboration with LeBron James during the games reignited conversations about a potential team-up between the two NBA giants. However, any such partnership is unlikely to involve Curry leaving his beloved Golden State Warriors.
According to a report by Marc Stein, Curry is expected to sign a contract extension with the Warriors, although the exact timing remains uncertain. Currently, the four-time NBA champion is eligible for a one-year, $62.6 million extension before Opening Night on October 22. Alternatively, Curry could opt for a more substantial two-year extension, potentially worth around $130 million, if he decides to wait.
Regardless of his choice, it’s clear that Stephen Curry is committed to the Warriors beyond the two years remaining on his current contract. This news should come as a significant relief to the Warriors, who faced a challenging offseason. The team was unable to secure their top targets, Paul George and Lauri Markkanen, and also lost franchise cornerstone Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks. Despite these setbacks, Golden State bolstered their roster by acquiring quality role players such as Kyle Anderson, Buddy Hield, and De’Anthony Melton.
The effectiveness of these new additions in propelling the Warriors back into title contention remains to be seen, especially with Thompson’s absence placing a greater burden on Curry offensively. The team is also hopeful that rookie Brandin Podziemski will emerge as a star, which was a key reason they resisted including him in trade talks with the Utah Jazz for Markkanen. Should Podziemski develop as hoped, the Warriors could be well-positioned for future success, particularly since they retain all their draft picks and could pursue further roster upgrades down the line. If the Warriors’ management is conveying this strategic optimism to Curry, it could further solidify his decision to stay with Golden State as his career progresses.
However, optimism can only carry a team so far. This upcoming season will mark the first time since Curry’s early years in the league that he won’t have Thompson either on the court or the bench. This is a significant shift for the Warriors, and if they struggle this season or fail to secure key targets shortly, it’s possible that Curry could explore free agency in 2027.
