Sparks manage to beat Mercury, courtesy of a potential winner miss by Diana Taurasi in the last moments

The Los Angeles Sparks defeated the Phoenix Mercury 78-75 on Monday night.  Nneka Ogwumike was brilliant in the game, scoring 23 points and nine rebounds, along with Liz Cambage’s 19 points, and seven rebounds.

Los Angeles (10-11) has won three straight games, most recently defeating New York on Sunday with a score of 84-74.

With 35.3 seconds left, Jordin Canada sank two free throws to give Los Angeles a two-possession lead. Diana Taurasi was fouled on a drive into the lane and converted two free throws at the opposite end.

With 9.6 seconds left, Ogwumike’s baseline jump shot missed, while Taurasi’s attempt for a 3-pointer for Phoenix missed the rim.

“It gets down to those last three minutes, it’s about making plays and getting stops in those moments and just making sure that we’re all on the same page,” head coach Vanessa Nygaard said postgame. Just had some unfortunate turnovers in those spaces and foul differential was a real thing in the game for us today.”

Star Performers

Los Angeles Sparks: For Los Angeles, Canada added 10, Katie Lou Samuelson added 10, and Lexie Brown added 14.

Phoenix Mercury: Diggins-Smith scored 22 points to lead Phoenix (9-14). Taurasi scored 13 points and dished out six assists, while Shey Peddy and Sophie Cunningham each scored 10.

Phoenix will play the Liberty on Thursday after losing its last two games.
