Famed NBA Insider Shams Charania recently shared a candid account of his early aspirations of becoming an NBA player, a dream that was cut short in high school. For Shams Charania, the reality of not making it to the professional level hit him early. “Growing up, I wanted to be where you were, where you guys were,” Charania told Udonis Haslem and Miller. “I wanted to be in the NBA, but obviously that’s not the reality for most of the world. It’s a 1% population that makes it to the NBA.”
Charania’s dream of playing in the NBA was dashed during his sophomore year of high school when he was cut from the team. “I got cut very early in high school, sophomore year, and from there, I knew my role. The moment I got cut, I wasn’t going to be MJ and make it to the NBA or make it to varsity or whatever. I was done.”

Coming from a background that valued stable and reliable professions, his parents, especially his mother, envisioned a career in the medical field for him. “It wasn’t anything negative, my mom wanted something stable for me. This path, even that I chose, there were no guarantees. I had no relationships to make it a guarantee. But it was something that I was really passionate about,” Shams Charania shared.
