Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant is set to return next season after a tumultuous year that saw him play only nine games. His 2023-2024 season was marred by a 25-game suspension and a shoulder injury that ultimately sidelined him for the remainder of the year. As anticipation builds for Morant’s comeback, 13-year NBA veteran and former Minnesota Timberwolves forward Sam Mitchell shared some pointed advice for the young star.
The Road Back to the Grizzlies
During an appearance on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Mitchell emphasized the challenges Morant will face as he reintegrates into the team. “It’s gonna be interesting to see how Taylor Jenkins and how this team functions with Ja coming back after missing basically the whole season,” Mitchell remarked. He noted that Morant’s absence wasn’t solely due to injury, adding, “He missed the whole season because of himself.”
While Mitchell’s comments were somewhat inaccurate—Morant did miss the latter part of the season due to a shoulder injury—his overall message was clear: Morant needs to approach his return with humility.
A Call for Humility and Accountability
Sam Mitchell didn’t mince words when discussing what Ja Morant needs to do upon his return. “So not only does he have to walk gently when he comes back through that door, he’s gotta have a sense of humility when he comes through that door,” Mitchell advised. He stressed that Morant’s actions had put his team in a difficult position and that the young guard would need to earn back the trust and respect of his teammates.
“You’re the one who left your teammates out to dry. You did this. They didn’t do it. You didn’t get hurt; you made decisions off the floor that jeopardized yourself, your status on the team, and your team’s success,” Mitchell continued, making it clear that Morant’s path to redemption won’t be easy.
The Challenge Ahead
While Morant’s suspension undoubtedly impacted the Grizzlies’ early-season struggles, injuries also played a significant role. However, as Mitchell pointed out, the responsibility for how Morant carries himself moving forward rests squarely on his shoulders. The coming season will be a crucial test for Morant, not just in terms of his physical recovery but in proving he can be a mature and reliable leader for the Grizzlies.
