Malik Monk’s decision to re-sign with the Sacramento Kings during the offseason took many by surprise, including one of his closest teammates, Domantas Sabonis. Fans who were unsure if Monk would remain with the Kings weren’t alone—Sabonis, an All-Star forward, was equally stunned by the guard’s choice to return to Sacramento.
Speaking at his youth basketball camp in Rocklin on Sunday, Sabonis opened up about his disbelief over Monk’s re-signing. Throughout the 2023-24 NBA season, their conversations had led Sabonis to believe that Monk might be heading to a different team.
“I was actually very surprised,” Sabonis shared with reporters (via Brenden Nunes). “We talked a lot during the season, and I really thought we had lost him. But I’m thrilled he stayed—it’s the best decision for both him and us.”

Malik Monk’s return was especially significant for Sabonis, who values Monk’s presence both on and off the court. When asked about the financial sacrifice Monk made to remain in Sacramento, Sabonis humorously suggested that the bond between them played a crucial role in Monk’s decision.
“I just think he didn’t want to leave me—that’s the main thing,” Sabonis joked, smiling. “I’m really happy he’s here. He’s one of the most important players on our team, and having him with us these last few years has been invaluable.”
Monk solidified his commitment to the Kings by signing a four-year, $78 million contract in July, ensuring the franchise retained one of its key contributors as they aim for a deep playoff run. During the 2023-24 season, Monk averaged 15.4 points, 5.1 assists, and 2.9 rebounds in 26 minutes per game, finishing second in the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award voting. His dynamic performances off the bench were instrumental in energizing the team.
As the new season approaches, Monk could be poised for a starting role, but most importantly, he’ll continue to share the court with Sabonis—a possibility that seemed uncertain until Monk made his surprising decision to return to Sacramento.
