Bill Walton, a towering figure in basketball history, passed away on Monday at the age of 71 after a courageous battle with cancer, as confirmed by an NBA announcement.
“Bill Walton was truly one of a kind. As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the center position,” stated NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in a heartfelt press release. “His unique all-around skills made him a dominant force at UCLA and led to an NBA regular-season and Finals MVP, two NBA championships, and a spot on the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Bill then translated his infectious enthusiasm and love for the game to broadcasting, where he delivered insightful and colorful commentary that entertained generations of basketball fans. But what I will remember most about him was his zest for life. He was a regular presence at league events—always upbeat, smiling ear to ear, and looking to share his wisdom and warmth. I treasured our close friendship, envied his boundless energy, and admired the time he took with every person he encountered.”
Walton’s illustrious career began as the No. 1 pick in the 1974 NBA Draft after an extraordinary collegiate run at UCLA. He played pivotal roles for the Portland Trail Blazers, San Diego/Los Angeles Clippers, and Boston Celtics. Walton’s impact was immediate and profound, securing two NBA titles—first with the Trail Blazers in 1977, where he was named the Finals MVP, and later with the Celtics in 1986. His performance in the 1977 Finals, where he led Portland to victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in six games, remains a highlight of his storied career.
Beyond his achievements on the court, Walton transitioned to a successful career in broadcasting, where he became a beloved commentator for Pac-12 men’s basketball, known for his insightful analysis and vibrant personality.
Walton’s passing has elicited a wave of tributes from the sports community. Legendary figures such as Julius Erving, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and many others have shared their memories and expressed their respect for Walton. His legacy is remembered not just for his basketball prowess but also for his remarkable spirit and enduring contributions to the game.
Bill Walton leaves behind a legacy of excellence, passion, and an indelible mark on the world of basketball, inspiring generations of players and fans alike.

RIP Bill Walton – my favorite example of his endless commitment to helping others is when he stepped in to assist the Lithuanian national basketball team as they broke away from the Soviet Union before facing the original Dream Team in 1992 pic.twitter.com/eZVtBZMOBX
