Jim Boylen experienced challenges both in his personal and professional journey amid the COVID-19 pandemic, including the loss of his brother, his marriage, and his position as head coach of the Chicago Bulls. Lost and unsure, Boylen was thrown a lifeline in 2021 when USA Basketball provided him with a coaching position for the men’s senior national team in the qualifying matches for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

A Fresh Start with USA Basketball

Even though Boylen did not have a prestigious job, he enthusiastically agreed to take on the position, expressing that he would be willing to make the effort to get there no matter what. Coaching a team of G League players against FIBA Americas teams brought comfort and meaning to Boylen. He was grateful for the opportunity to mourn and be with his children as he navigated his personal challenges.

Making a Mark in Qualifying

Under Boylen’s guidance, the U.S. team achieved a 9-3 record in qualifying, with a streak of six consecutive wins. Even though the United States came in fourth place at the World Cup, they still managed to lock in a place in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Boylen quickly adjusted to the intricacies of the FIBA game, streamlining tactics and emphasizing effective gameplay.

Renewed Passion and Growth

Boylen’s commitment to the national team reignited his love for coaching. Utilizing his expertise, he assisted the U.S. senior team by collaborating with emerging talents such as Cooper Flagg and other youthful NBA players. Even though Boylen is not included in the team going to Paris, his impact is still significant.

A Blue-Collar Coach’s Resilience

Jim Boylen, an experienced coach with extensive experience during journey in college and NBA basketball. Demonstrates his resilience and development as he transitions from overcoming difficulties to a revitalized position in the sport. Boylen, currently an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers, looks back on his past experiences with thankfulness.

Jim Boylen explains that while he won’t receive a medal if the American men win gold. He will still play a significant role in the effort to achieve gold.
