The Pitt State women’s basketball team is gearing up for their 2024 season opener on Saturday, following a landmark 2023 season in which they clinched their first-ever MIAA championship title. Head Coach Amanda Davied, entering her seventh season, led the team to the top-scoring offense in the conference last year—a testament to their offensive prowess.

Coach David has the advantage of returning all five starters from last season: forward Karenna Gerber, along with guards Grace Pyle, Macie Mays, Harper Schreiner, and Sydney Holmes. These returning players are joined by four new additions, bringing both experience and fresh talent to a roster ranked No. 13 in preseason polls. David emphasizes the importance of the team’s competitive spirit and dedication. “We’re working to instil a mindset of daily commitment,” she said. “To build a successful program, you’ve got to show up and work every day. For us, that competitive drive is at the heart of our culture.”

Sophomore forward Macie Mays, reflecting on the influence of her upperclassmen mentors, sees herself as a role model for incoming players. “I had great upperclassmen to look up to during my freshman year, and I hope to set the same example now,” Mays said. “We’re building a strong foundation by passing on that standard to the younger players.”

With a powerful blend of depth, experience, and new energy, the Gorillas are focused on carrying forward last season’s success and setting a lasting example for future squads.
