As the NBA offseason heats up, Paul George has emerged as the most coveted free agent, assuming LeBron James stays with the Lakers. With unrestricted free agency status, George has the freedom to join any team with the resources to acquire him, either through cap space or a sign-and-trade deal with the Clippers. The Philadelphia 76ers have expressed strong interest in George, highlighting him as their primary target and possessing the necessary max salary-cap space.

The Clippers have shown reluctance to offer George more than the three-year, $152.3 million extension they gave Kawhi Leonard. While they can offer George a full-maximum contract of $221 million over four years, they seem unwilling to do so. This hesitation could push George to consider a move to Philadelphia, where he could potentially pursue a championship alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

However, George has made it clear that his priority isn’t necessarily chasing championships. “At this point, I’m not even necessarily; this is not even about chasing a championship; it’s not that. Playing the right style of basketball is what I’m chasing,” George said on his podcast.

George didn’t elaborate on what he meant by “the right style of basketball,” leaving his statement open to interpretation. This ambiguity makes it difficult to discern his true intentions or preferences for his next team. The concept of the “right style” is subjective, as every team tailors its playstyle to its personnel. For example, Kevin Durant joined the Warriors to play in their unique ball and player movement system, which was distinct from other teams at the time.

Nowadays, NBA teams have less variation in their playstyles, generally falling into two categories: those that emphasize ball movement and those that rely on high-usage stars like Luka Doncic or Trae Young. George, who has played with James Harden on the Clippers, might not want to be in a system where he waits for a pass with only seconds left on the shot clock.

Looking at potential destinations, it’s hard to pinpoint which teams play the “wrong style” for George. He’s comfortable with the Clippers’ approach and could fit well with the 76ers, who, under Nick Nurse, play a fast-paced game centered around Embiid and Maxey. The Orlando Magic could build their offense around George, given their lack of a clear offensive identity, but it’s unlikely George would leave the Clippers for a team with less championship potential like the Magic or the Houston Rockets.

Defense also plays a crucial role in George’s decision-making. He praised the Celtics for their defensive versatility, indicating that he values a team’s defensive capabilities as much as their offensive style. This makes teams like Orlando more appealing if they can complement George’s offense with a solid defense.

In today’s NBA, predicting where a star player like Paul George might land is challenging. Cap space is a significant factor, but where there’s a will, there’s a way. George’s preference for the “right style” of play remains vague, making his free agency an intriguing storyline to follow.
