Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero stirred conversation by revealing his all-time starting lineup for Duke basketball on ESPN’s First Take. Despite his impressive college career and rising NBA stardom, Banchero chose not to include himself in this elite group, opting instead to highlight other legends from Duke’s storied program.

Banchero’s Duke Dream Team

Banchero’s top five featured Dallas Mavericks veteran Kyrie Irving and Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum, along with Zion Williamson, J.J. Redick, and Jahlil Okafor at center. He explained his selections to Stephen A. Smith, saying, “I don’t like to put myself in it because there are so many legends.”

A Fresh Perspective

Banchero, who played for Duke in the 2021-22 season, justified his picks based on his personal experiences and observations. He noted, “I’m going off of what I saw with my own two [eyes].” This personal connection to the players he watched growing up influenced his decisions, including his admiration for Jahlil Okafor’s championship-winning freshman season and J.J. Redick’s legacy and presence during Banchero’s time at Duke.

Acknowledging Duke Legends

Stephen A. Smith challenged Banchero’s lineup, suggesting it was incomplete without including Christian Laettner or Grant Hill. Banchero acknowledged their greatness but maintained his picks were based on his firsthand experiences. Laettner and Hill, who completed their college careers before Banchero was born, understandably didn’t make his list.

Banchero’s Duke Career

During his 2021-22 campaign at Duke, Paolo Banchero averaged 17.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, helping the Blue Devils reach the national semifinals. His standout college performance earned him a Rookie of the Year award and an All-Star nomination in his two NBA seasons.

Looking Ahead

As Banchero gears up for his third NBA season, he aims to build on his early success with the Orlando Magic. The Magic’s 2024-25 season opener against the Miami Heat on October 23 will be another step in Banchero’s promising career.

Paolo Banchero’s all-time Duke starting lineup reflects his personal journey and experiences as a fan and player. While legends like Laettner and Hill hold their place in Duke history, Banchero’s selections celebrate the more recent stars who influenced his path. As he continues to grow in the NBA, his perspective offers a fresh take on Duke’s basketball legacy.
