Giannis Antetokounmpo is on the brink of reaching another one of the most important achievements in his basketball journey. Famous for his outstanding achievements in the NBA, Antetokounmpo will participate in his first Olympic appearance at the 2024 Paris Games.

Olympic Debut

Antetokounmpo clinched Greece’s spot in the 2024 Olympics by defeating Croatia on July 7. Greece is set to be part of Group A alongside Australia, Canada, and Spain. This will be Greece’s fifth time competing in the Olympics, having participated in 1952, 1996, 2004, 2008, and 2022. Greece is hoping to secure its first Olympic medal with Antetokounmpo as part of the team.

Antetokounmpo expressed his desire to participate in the Olympics, live in the Olympic Village, and be in the company of top athletes. “It was something I had always dreamed of, and achieving it alongside my team was a significant moment for us as athletes, as well as for our nation.”

Background and Achievements

Born in Athens, Greece, to parents who had immigrated from Nigeria, Antetokounmpo encountered difficulties in obtaining Greek citizenship. He was granted citizenship on May 9, 2013, only two months prior to the NBA draft. Even though he felt like he didn’t belong, Antetokounmpo now represents the high level of basketball in Greece.

He was designated as the Greek flag bearer at the Paris Games on July 9, becoming the first Black athlete to receive this distinction. He commented, “It is a great privilege for me.” I am aware that my family has a lot of pride in me.

Nickname and Stats

Antetokounmpo is referred to as the “Greek Freak” because of his rare combination of size, speed, and strength. Even though he didn’t like it at first, he now sees it as proof of his exceptional abilities.

At the age of 29, Antetokounmpo, selected as the 15th overall pick in 2013. He is an experienced athlete prepared to compete in his first Olympics. He earned 23 points and snatched eight rebounds in the game that secured Greece’s spot in the Olympics.

Antetokounmpo’s involvement in the 2024 Paris Olympics will be a one of the most important achievements, contributing to his already distinguished career.
