The Oklahoma City Thunder find themselves on the brink of elimination following a crucial Game 5 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday. The defeat on their home court has put the Thunder in a must-win situation as they head into Game 6 with the series tied at 2-2. This marks the franchise’s most significant playoff appearance in nearly a decade, amplifying the stakes for both the team and its fans.

Chet Holmgren, the Thunder’s promising rookie, took to social media post-game to express his frustration. Holmgren reposted a TikTok image featuring Morty Smith from the popular show “Rick and Morty” lying in bed, with a preview for Saturday’s Game 6 overlaid on the image. However, Chet Holmgren did not notice the caption suggesting that the team was “cooked.” This detail caught fans’ attention, and screenshots of Holmgren’s repost quickly circulated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

By the following morning, Holmgren clarified the situation, explaining he hadn’t seen the caption when he reposted the TikTok. He stated his intent was to convey his frustration with the Game 5 loss, identifying with Morty’s despondent expression.

Chet Holmgren has generally impressed during the postseason, but Game 5 was challenging for the young center. Holmgren scored only 13 points, hitting 5 of his 11 attempts from the field, including just 1-5 from three-point range. The Thunder collectively struggled from beyond the arc, shooting a mere 10-40.

Holmgren, along with teammates Lu Dort, Jalen Williams, and Isaiah Joe—who was added to the starting lineup for this crucial game—shot just 5-24 from three-point territory. Holmgren’s struggles extended beyond scoring; he finished the game with only four rebounds, significantly below his postseason average of 7.7 rebounds per game. This highlights the broader difficulties he faced throughout the game.

Overall, the Thunder were outrebounded by 13 boards, a decisive factor in their loss. The team’s overall performance was lacklustre, necessitating a substantial improvement in Game 6.

Saturday’s Game 6 will be held in Dallas, where the Mavericks have the chance to close out the series and advance to the Conference Finals. For the Thunder, this game is a final opportunity to keep their playoff hopes alive and force a decisive Game 7. Holmgren will need to bounce back, and the team must improve their shooting efficiency from beyond the arc.

The stakes are high, and the pressure on Holmgren and his teammates is immense. The outcome of Game 6 will determine their immediate future and shape the narrative of Holmgren’s career and the Thunder’s rebuilding efforts.
