Russell Westbrook’s first game with the Denver Nuggets didn’t go well, as he struggled against his former team, the Oklahoma City Thunder. Westbrook scored only six points in Denver’s 102-87 loss, shooting just 2-of-10 from the field, with 1-of-6 from three-point range. His difficulties were similar to the obstacles encountered by Denver’s reserves, unable to match the performance of OKC’s formidable second group. Westbrook recorded five assists, five rebounds, two blocks, and a steal in his 21-minute playing time, however, Denver was down by 24 points while he was on the court.

Thunder Shine Through Shai and Holmgren

OKC highlighted their up-and-coming players, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivering an impressive performance with 28 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, three blocks, and three steals, nearly reaching MVP status. Chet Holmgren showed his potential as a rising star by scoring 25 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, dishing out five assists, and blocking four shots. Alex Caruso, a guard for the Thunder, had a silent yet significant game with a +19 rating without scoring any points, as Aaron Wiggins contributed 15 points from the bench.

Denver’s Offense Falls Flat

Despite all five Nuggets starters scoring in double figures, no one exceeded 16 points. Despite Nikola Jokic’s triple-double of 16 points, 13 assists, and 12 rebounds, his team faced difficulties as they shot just 35.4 percent from the field and 7-of-39 from beyond the arc. Russell Westbrook, who signed a two-year contract with Denver, is anticipated to strengthen the bench, filling in for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope who has left the team. In spite of the sluggish beginning, Westbrook still has the opportunity to adjust and assist Denver in their comeback before their matchup against the Clippers this Saturday.
