“I think it is closed for Philly,” stated an NBA front office insider to CBS Sports. “So there should be that fear. And I’m not a Miami believer, either. So I think they’re cooked. But I don’t think they have that fear, because I’m not sure they’re honest about themselves.”
The Heat refrained from making major offseason acquisitions, which could explain why some do not consider them top contenders in the Eastern Conference.
Meanwhile, their key rivals, the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics, significantly improved their rosters. Notably, the Bucks acquired Damian Lillard, a superstar guard, from the Portland Trail Blazers, who had initially expressed interest in joining Miami.
The situation worsened for the Heat when the Celtics acquired Jrue Holiday in a trade related to Lillard, although Holiday was once linked to Miami.
To be competitive this season, the Heat must rely on internal improvements. Tyler Herro, despite missing most of the 2023 playoffs due to a hand injury, remains confident and aimed to silence doubters.
Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler are expected to continue their consistent contributions on both ends of the court. Offseason additions, such as Josh Richardson and Thomas Bryant, are likely to have significant roles within the team.
Although rookie Jaime Jaquez Jr. was part of trade rumors involving Lillard, he appears ready for substantial playing time. Despite a promising preseason debut, he unfortunately suffered an injury during practice.
Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra remains confident in his team. Last season, the Heat had to fight their way into the playoffs through the play-in tournament, nearly being eliminated by the Chicago Bulls.
Nonetheless, they rallied to beat the Bucks, New York Knicks, and Celtics, ultimately reaching the NBA Finals, where they succumbed to the Denver Nuggets in five games.
The memory of that series loss will undoubtedly serve as motivation for the organization throughout the 2023-24 season. The Heat’s regular season is scheduled to begin on October 25, when they face the Detroit Pistons at home.
