The NBA playoffs began, but attention has turned to regular season awards coming out soon. Unlike the previous years, when ballots were submitted after the conclusion of play-in games, the NBA 2024 Awards has this time announced finalists for its top-end awards even before the completion of the record-length season. Here’s a breakdown:
Most Valuable Player: Nika Jokic, Luka Doncic, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Defensive Player of the Year: Joel Embiid, Rudy Gobert, and Bam Adebayo are among the most dominant big men in the league this season.
Rookie of the Year: Viktor Wembanyama, Chet Hollmegren, and Brandon Miller.
Most Improved Player: Coby White, Alperen Sengun, and Tyrese Maxey.
Sixth Man of the Year: One particular player in this squad that stood out for me, especially on defence, was Naz Reid. Another stellar performer, Malik Monk, showed his pure firepower many times on offence. Additionally, there was Bobby Portis, who had an overall solid game.
Clutch Player of the Year: Steph Curry, Demar DeRozan, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are the ones.
Coach of the Year: Chalk talks by Mark Daigneault (Thunder), Chris Finch (Timberwolves), and Jamahl Mosley (Magic).
Through the shortlisting of both Wembanyama and Gilgeous-Alexander in many categories, we can predict that one of them is likely to win the award for their respective category. Joker seeks his third MVP title, while Goblet rampages for the fourth DPOY trophy. Some runners find themselves in the search for their first championship titles, with Wembanyama, Maxey, Reid, and DeRozan among the contenders for a championship trophy for their first-time success.
While the NBA 2024 Awards haven’t issued an official schedule for the award announcements, we can draw from past editions™ experiences that they are likely to be announced at the beginning of the playoffs. With past winners’ revelations drawing close, the excitement has been increasing noticeably as post-season finals array on.
