The Dallas Mavericks are bringing back a familiar face for the upcoming season by signing veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie to a one-year deal, according to The Athletic. Dinwiddie, who played for the Nets and Lakers last season, returns to the team he helped reach the Western Conference Finals in 2022.
The Mavericks considered several candidates for their final roster spot, including Dennis Smith Jr. and Talen Horton-Tucker, but Dinwiddie emerged as the favorite, as reported by Marc Stein. Dinwiddie was traded from the Mavericks to the Brooklyn Nets in the deal that brought Kyrie Irving to Dallas in 2023. After a brief stint with the Nets and then the Toronto Raptors, Dinwiddie was bought out and almost rejoined Dallas at the trade deadline before ultimately choosing the Lakers.
During the 2021-22 season, Spencer Dinwiddie averaged 15.8 points on 49.8% shooting off the bench after being traded from the Wizards to the Mavericks. He was a key contributor in the postseason, averaging 14.2 points on 41.7% shooting from three-point range. His successful stint and seamless fit with the team make him an ideal addition to the backcourt alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Dinwiddie’s return gives the Mavericks another guard who can create off the bench, addressing a need they had in the NBA Finals against the Celtics. However, with the emergence of young guard Jaden Hardy, and the additions of Quentin Grimes and Dante Exum, Dinwiddie’s role may be limited. Grimes and Exum provide more defensive capabilities, and Hardy has earned more minutes with his playoff performances. Despite this, having Dinwiddie as an option off the bench adds valuable depth to a Dallas team aiming for another Finals run.
