Mark Davis Defends Aces Amid WNBA Investigation of Sponsorship Deal

Las Vegas Aces owner Mark Davis has broken his silence regarding the WNBA’s recent investigation into his team’s sponsorship deal. The WNBA announced the investigation following the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s (LVCVA’s)  unprecedented $1.2 million sponsorship of the Aces. Davis, ready to discuss the issue with the league, maintains that the team has done nothing wrong.

Davis expressed his disappointment with the term “investigation,” suggesting it implies wrongdoing. He believes a softer approach, such as stating an intent to review the situation, would have been more appropriate. Davis is confident that the league will find no violations in the sponsorship arrangement.

Last week, the LVCVA revealed a $100,000-per-player sponsorship deal, negotiated individually with each player and their agent. However, WNBA rules prohibit teams from facilitating such deals to avoid violating the league’s collective bargaining agreement. The WNBA’s salary cap of $1.4 million and concerns about competitive equity, especially in wealthier markets, prompted the investigation.

Davis, who purchased the Aces in 2021 with the goal of increasing player salaries, emphasized the importance of the LVCVA’s recognition of the players’ value. He highlighted the benefits of such sponsorships, which could allow players to remain in their communities year-round, avoiding the need to play overseas.

Mark Davis criticized the WNBA’s use of the term “investigation,” fearing it might deter potential sponsors. He suggested a more positive approach, encouraging similar sponsorships across the league.

Pointing out a potential double standard, Davis noted that while his Las Vegas Raiders are prohibited from sponsoring the Aces, Nike, an equity investor in the WNBA, can sponsor individual players, such as Caitlin Clark. He praised Nike’s support but called for recognition of the LVCVA’s efforts to support the Aces.
