Klay Thompson’s recent trade to the Dallas Mavericks has thrilled fans as the next NBA season, 2024-25, approaches. Having played for the Golden State Warriors for 13 seasons in his career, Thompson moved to Dallas after claiming four championships. From his side, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was very clear that, unlike the Warriors, they will use Klay Thompson differently.
Thompson enters the Mavericks at the age of 34 on a three-year, $50 million contract to be a shooting specialist and a title winner for Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving teams. The strategy prepared for Cuban regarding Thompson is to conserve his strength and attempt to shoot as many balls as possible in as few attempts as possible.
“Of course, the massive upgrade was Klay Thompson,” Mark Cuban said, “In Golden State, he was always moving on offense in their Golden State Warriors motion, setting screens, which requires a lot of energy. In our form of play, he’d be mostly setting up shop on the wing or the corner, waiting to catch and shoot from Luka or Kyrie. He doesn’t have to move around as much. We intend to ease his burden. ”
Thompson’s Perspective: A New Beginning in Dallas
In his opening press conference, Thompson expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the Mavericks and his excitement about playing with Doncic and Irving.
“We know what they’re capable of, but I don’t think you can stick to me as much as you could In the past with guys like Luka and Kyrie out there,” Thompson said. “That was very attractive to me. I still think I can do what I’ve been able to do, and I know I can help this team. I am just really excited to be rejuvenated here, whether it is through my experience or on big-scoring nights.”
Thompson also stressed his desire to continue as a high producer, noting that while one has to be in good physical shape to do the job intensely, he still feels that he has a lot more to offer if given the opportunity.
A New Era for the Mavericks
Cuban’s strategic vision, coupled with Thompson’s readiness to adapt, positions the Mavericks to integrate one of the NBA’s premier shooters into their system. As Thompson settles into his role, Dallas fans can look forward to seeing how this new dynamic unfolds and how it might propel the team to greater success.
