Luka Garza, the center for the Minnesota Timberwolves, captivated attention during the team’s initial preseason matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers. During the eagerly awaited debut of Bronny James, Garza’s exceptional performance stole the spotlight and captivated everyone’s attention. Garza, who was born in Washington to a varied family, has a strong athletic background. His mother, Sejla, comes from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and his father, Frank, is originally from Spain. Having parents who were both professional basketball players, Garza seemed destined to pursue a career in the NBA. He excelled while playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes, achieving the honor of National Player of the Year and being named a first-team All-American twice.

From Draft Day to Dominance

Garza, despite his strong college performance, was chosen in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons as the 52nd pick in the second round. His first year in the league was difficult, with him scoring an average of only 5.8 points in the few minutes he played. After playing one season, he switched to the Timberwolves. Where he served as a reserve center behind Rudy Gobert and Naz Reid. Garza maintained an average of 5.3 points during his two seasons with the team. Yet he just agreed to a two-year contract valued at $4.5 million. Demonstrating the Timberwolves’ confidence in his ability.

A Stellar Performance Against the Lakers

Garza stood out in the Timberwolves’ win against the Lakers. Coming off the bench to score 20 points and narrowly miss a double-double by grabbing nine rebounds. Due to Karl-Anthony Towns’ absence, Garza could see more time on the court in the future. If he keeps playing this well, he could solidify his spot in the Timberwolves’ lineup and keep impressing as the season goes on.
