Luka Doncic of the Mavericks etches his name in NBA history with an incredible, Luka Doncic’s Record-Breaking First-Half Triple-Double during the victory over the Jazz
Before Wednesday, there had been a mere dozen 29-point triple-doubles in the NBA this season, half of which were credited to Nikola Jokic. This feat, for almost anyone else, stands as an exceptional accomplishment that many players may never achieve in their careers. Luka Doncic, however, manages this feat occasionally and, on Wednesday, notched his fourth such performance of the season. If the tale concluded there, it would already be a remarkable night, albeit not an entirely unexpected one for the Dallas Mavericks’ standout.
Luka Doncic’s Record-Breaking First-Half Triple-Double
Yet, the story didn’t conclude there; it wrapped up by halftime. By the end of the second quarter, Doncic had already secured his 29-point triple-double. Yes, in just 24 minutes against the Utah Jazz, he scored 29 points, assisted 10 times, and collected 10 rebounds, culminating in a commanding 147-97 triumph over the Utah Jazz.
While Doncic’s overall stats remained exceptional, they didn’t change significantly after halftime. Finishing with 40 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists after sitting out the fourth quarter during the blowout, his performance was so stellar that it even provoked a reaction from Kris Dunn, one of the Jazz players tasked with defending him. The two engaged in a minor altercation, with Doncic later caught on microphones saying, “he’s just mad I busted his ass.”
If necessary, reaching a 50-point triple-double was well within his grasp. However, it marked his 60th career triple-double, propelling him ahead of Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird for ninth place on the all-time leaderboard. Given his current form this season, it’s conceivable that he could challenge Wilt Chamberlain’s seventh-place standing of 78 triple-doubles by the end of this campaign.
Undoubtedly, he’s bound to climb higher on that list. Doncic currently trails four active players in the all-time triple-double rankings: Russell Westbrook, LeBron James, James Harden, and Nikola Jokic. At just 24 years old, he’s already a third of the way to reaching Oscar Robertson’s retired record of 181 triple-doubles. When you can achieve triple-doubles by halftime, there’s little hindering you from setting historic records at an impressive pace.
