Luka Doncic is back on the court, participating in his first practice with the Dallas Mavericks since October 2, following a left calf contusion. Head coach Jason Kidd expressed optimism about Doncic’s recovery, noting that the All-Star guard Luka Doncic performed “really, really well” in the session as he rebounds from the injury sustained during training camp.
Recovery Process and Outlook
The Mavericks have taken a cautious approach with Doncic’s recovery. An MRI revealed no significant damage, but the team prescribed a week of rest before allowing him to return to on-court activities. While Doncic is unlikely to suit up for the team’s preseason matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday, the hope is that he’ll be ready for Dallas’ regular-season opener against the San Antonio Spurs on October 24.
If Doncic is fully fit, the opening game would mark the first time Mavericks fans will see him play alongside Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson in a competitive setting. Thompson, who signed a three-year, $50 million contract in the offseason, is dealing with back tightness but has been active in preseason games. However, he has struggled with his shot, including a 0-for-9 performance against the Clippers earlier in the week.
Luka Doncic’s Importance to Dallas
At 25, Doncic is already one of the most accomplished players in the NBA, with five First-Team All-NBA selections to his name. Last season, he led the league in scoring with 33.9 points per game while also contributing a career-high 9.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds per game. Despite battling injury, Luka Doncic showed his resilience by averaging nearly 29 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 8.1 assists in 22 postseason games.
As the regular season approaches, the Mavericks will be hoping for a healthy Doncic to lead them once again as they chase another deep playoff run.
