Lonzo Ball Eyes Comeback, The road to recovery seems to be clearing up for Chicago Bulls’ guard whose persistent knee injury has sidelined him since the 2021-22 season. According to the Chicago Tribune report, Ball has received medical clearance to begin running again in January, signalling a potential step forward in his journey back to the court.
Bulls head coach Billy Donovan expressed optimism, stating, “The pain that he was experiencing that was causing the setback, I think, has been eliminated… The next progression for him will be to start running and that will be here in January.”
Lonzo Ball Eyes Comeback to Chicago, Ball is collaborating with Bulls staff to devise a strategic plan aimed at facilitating his possible return to active play.
Ball’s basketball journey has been fraught with injury hurdles over the past couple of years. The 6-foot-6 guard underwent multiple surgeries due to a torn left meniscus suffered in January 2022 against the Warriors, ultimately leading to a series of setbacks. Despite initial timetables and attempts to return, discomfort persisted, forcing Ball to conclude his 2021-22 season after just 35 games.
The subsequent surgeries in September 2022 and March 2023 aimed to alleviate the persistent knee issues but prolonged his absence. The NBA granted the Bulls a disabled player exception of $10.2 million for the season, acknowledging Ball’s absence.
Despite uncertainties about his availability in the ongoing campaign, Ball’s progress in resuming running activities marks a pivotal moment in his recovery. His earlier stint with the Bulls showcased promising performance, averaging 13.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists while showcasing improved shooting prowess.
The 26-year-old, a key part of the Bulls’ strategic plans after the sign-and-trade deal with the New Orleans Pelicans, signed a four-year, $85 million contract, and holds a player option for the 2024-25 season.
As Ball aims to navigate through this rehabilitation phase, his potential return remains uncertain for the current season, but this forward movement in his recovery offers hope for his eventual comeback to the NBA courts.
