During his Asia trip this summer, Kyle Kuzma, a former forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, made a stop in the Philippines in late August. While travelling, the 2020 NBA title holder organized a basketball workshop and interacted with numerous Filipino fans, majority of whom are avid Lakers enthusiasts.
Kuzma on the Lakers Giving Up Too Soon
During a press briefing held at Dusit Thani Hotel, Kuzma discussed his feelings about being traded by the Lakers following the 2021 Playoffs. Kuzma said he believed the Lakers had abandoned him too soon. He acknowledged that he frequently ponders what the outcome would have been if the team had retained him instead of trading for Russell Westbrook. Kuzma thought that, if the roster had been healthy, the Lakers could have won consecutive championships in 2021.
Winning a Championship with the Lakers
Even after the trade, Kuzma still cherished his time playing for the Lakers, highlighting the importance of winning a championship with superstars such as LeBron James and Anthony Davis. He observed the close connection between the 2020 championship team and highlighted how important their chemistry was to their achievements. Kuzma acknowledged his experienced teammates for imparting important lessons to him as a rookie.
Mentored by Kobe Bryant
Kuzma also pondered about his connection with the deceased Kobe Bryant, whom he characterized as a mentor and advisor. Kuzma showed appreciation for the guidance Bryant gave him, both on and off the basketball court. Despite no longer donning the Lakers jersey, Kuzma values the knowledge imparted by Bryant and the championship experiences shared with the team.
Kyle Kuzma will always consider his time with the Lakers as a significant chapter in his life.
