The Cleveland Cavaliers have appointed Kenny Atkinson, an experienced NBA assistant coach who has previous head coaching credentials, as their new head coach. This information is from a trustworthy source who talked to USA TODAY Sports anonymously.

Coaching Experience and Achievements

At 57 years old, Atkinson offers extensive expertise in player growth and strategic organization. He used to be the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2020. Throughout his time in office, he achieved a record of 118-190, consistently leading his teams to demonstrate considerable progress with each passing season. Even though he had made strides with the Nets, Atkinson left the team after they signed top players Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden.

Recent Roles and Development

Following his stint with the Nets, Atkinson became an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors. He closely collaborated with head coach Steve Kerr to improve his coaching skills even more. He spent some time with the Los Angeles Clippers before coming back to the Warriors. In 2022, Atkinson turned down coaching the Charlotte Hornets to stay with the Warriors, who ended up winning the NBA Finals that year.

Challenges Ahead

Atkinson assumes control of a Cavaliers squad that ended the previous season with a 48-34 record, clinching the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference. The team defeated the Orlando Magic in the initial playoff stage but lost to the Boston Celtics in the following round.
The Cavaliers have numerous key roster choices to make, one of which is to secure a contract extension for All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell, who has two years left on his current deal, can enter free agency following the 2024-25 season. The Cavaliers are counting on Atkinson’s leadership to strengthen their lineup and lead the team to more success.
The hiring of Kenny Atkinson signals an exciting new phase for the Cleveland Cavaliers, with optimism for ongoing growth and success.
