Fernandez, an NBA assistant coach, took over the Canadian national team from Nick Nurse, a seasoned NBA head coach. In his very first tournament, he led Canada to its first-ever medal at the FIBA World Cup.
Despite expectations that Canada would mimic Team USA, they showcased a distinct style of play, often resembling the approach of European teams in international competitions.
In an interview with Toni Canyameras from Mundo Deportivo, Fernandez emphasized Canada’s unique playing style, shaped by their physical attributes and qualities. He asserted that Canada possessed its own identity, distinct from European and American teams.
Fernandez explained, “We have a style of play that had to be different due to our physical capabilities and qualities. We are not a European team, nor are we the United States, we have our own identity,” He highlighted their ability to transition quickly and generate quality shots, contributing to high offensive efficiency.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander emerged as the team’s star player, delivering impressive statistics (24.5 PTS, 6.4 REB, 6.4 AST, 1.6 STL) and consistent dominance throughout the tournament. Fernandez praised SGA’s adaptability to the FIBA game and credited his intelligence for his outstanding performance.
Regarding his own career aspirations, Fernandez revealed that he was a finalist for the Toronto Raptors’ head coaching position but ultimately was not selected. He now serves as an associate head coach for the Sacramento Kings and hopes to become an NBA head coach in the future.
However, Fernandez emphasized that coaching the Canadian national team held immense value for him. He expressed excitement about learning and facing new challenges in life but stressed that he wasn’t obsessed with the idea of becoming an NBA head coach. His World Cup and Olympic coaching experiences were irreplaceable, and he cherished them above all else, acknowledging that the future remained uncertain.
