Celtics’ Record-Breaking 3-Point Reliance
The Boston Celtics and Jayson Tatum are reshaping NBA history through their unmatched dependence on the 3-point shot. This season, the team is set to break league records for the number of 3-pointers both made and attempted. The Celtics score 47% of their points from three-point range—an extraordinary metric that emphasizes their excellence in deep shooting.
Coach Joe Mazzulla endorses this method, declaring, “This is our mission…we aspire to be the finest version of ourselves.” Star player Jayson Tatum embodies this approach, consistently taking a large number of 3-point shots, highlighted by an 18-attempt game this season.
The League-Wide 3-Point Craze
Boston Celtics and Jayson Tatum is not the only team advancing the 3-point boundary. Thirteen NBA teams, such as Charlotte, Cleveland, and Philadelphia, are likely to exceed their franchise records for 3-point attempts. Charlotte coach Charles Lee, previously a Celtics assistant, has introduced Boston’s approach to the Hornets, allowing players such as LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller the freedom to shoot. Ball also logged the first game of the season with 20 attempts from beyond the arc.
The statistics reveal the narrative: Teams that score more 3-pointers than their rivals win 67% of the time. If they hit 10 additional 3s, they remain undefeated this season, holding a record of 31-0.
3-Pointers Are Here to Stay
This pattern exhibits no indications of tapering off. Coaches, such as Darko Rajaković from Toronto, stress the importance of regular practice, motivating players to take shots with assurance. Miami’s Erik Spoelstra emphasizes the need to balance 3-point shooting with penetrating the paint, yet the 3-point shot still reigns supreme.
In a time when almost all NBA players shoot 3s, teams such as the Celtics demonstrate that excelling from long-range is a successful strategy. With players such as Tatum at the forefront, the league’s fascination with 3-pointers will only expand further.
