Ja Morant’s Recent Controversies Likely Resulted in a $38 Million Loss
The way Ja Morant inked his contract extension with the Memphis Grizzlies may have cost him a significant amount of money due to recent controversies.
Last summer, Morant signed a deal binding him to the franchise for an additional five years. The Rose Rule allowed the initial evaluation of $193 million to potentially rise to $231 million.
Named after Derrick Rose, this rule allows teams to reward young superstars who exceed the typical player development trajectory in the league. To reach the 30% mark instead of the standard 25% value, one of three conditions must be met:
- Being named to an All-NBA team in the most recent season or in two of the last three seasons.
- Being named Defensive Player of the Year in the most recent season or in two of the last three seasons.
- Being named Most Valuable Player in any of the last three seasons.
Morant earned a spot on the All-NBA Second Team last season. However, with his recent controversies and team suspension, achieving this feat again seems unlikely. According to projections, Morant may lose out on $38 million.
Morant recently faced trouble after hosting an Instagram Live from a nightclub where he displayed a gun to a large audience. The team suspended him, and a photo emerged from the nightclub, showing Morant with dancers and cash covering almost every surface.
Following this incident, he announced his break from basketball to address personal issues and entered counseling in Florida.
Morant has been involved in a series of public controversies recently. A story surfaced that he punched a teenager during a basketball game in his Tennessee home. Afterward, he allegedly appeared with a visible gun in the waistband of his pants and his hand on the weapon.
During the summer, Morant had a verbal altercation with Memphis police in a city mall when he and his friends refused to leave the parking lot upon a security guard’s request.
Morant was also associated with another gun-related incident when his friend Devonte Pack was banned from attending Grizzlies home games for verbally abusing Indiana Pacers players during and after a game. Although the Pacers believed a gun was pointed at them, the NBA denied it in their report.
