Former Givenchy designer Matthew Williams recently sparked banter with Memphis Grizzlies’ star Ja Morant over the NBA player’s extensive tattoo session, which reportedly required anaesthesia. Williams jokingly commented on Morant’s choice to undergo anaesthesia for his tattoo session, contrasting it with his own experience of staying awake during the process.
Morant, known for his laid-back demeanour, took the friendly jab in stride, emphasizing his preference for completing the tattoo work in a single session rather than spreading it out over multiple sessions.
“Shots fired. I might have to catch a stray,” Morant responded with humor. “People do what they do, man. I wanted to knock it out in one session; you know, I ain’t gotta do ten.”
Morant’s decision to undergo a 10-hour tattoo session during the offseason ahead of the 2023–24 NBA season attracted attention due to the extensive nature of the artwork. The tattoo, covering his entire upper body, is a testament to his journey and features various elements with personal significance to the young NBA star.
Among the notable features of Morant’s tattoo is a tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, a basketball icon whom Morant greatly admired. The tattoo includes two lower back pieces representing the ‘Mamba Mentality’, with Kobe’s jersey number 24 and the “Mentality” inscription, as well as the “sheath” logo associated with Kobe’s Nike collection.
Additionally, Morant incorporated symbols representing pivotal moments and influences in his life and career. The Nike swoosh logo, prominently displayed by his spine, pays homage to the brand’s support during challenging times, including his suspension and off-court controversies.
Despite facing scrutiny and a 25-game suspension from the NBA, Morant remained steadfast in his commitment to self-expression and personal growth. His decision to commemorate his journey through body art reflects his resilience and determination to stay true to himself amidst adversity.
As Morant continues to make headlines both on and off the court, his tattoo journey serves as a visual representation of his evolving identity and unwavering spirit. With each stroke of ink, he adds another chapter to his story, solidifying his place in NBA history and inspiring fans around the world.
