Despite growing up in New Jersey and dominating the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Karl-Anthony Towns has never forgotten his Dominican roots. Karl-Anthony Towns Saving Dominican Youth is a powerful tribute to his late mother and the homeland that shaped his values. Towns announced on Thursday his ambitious plan to construct a cutting-edge basketball facility in Santiago, Dominican Republic. This facility won’t just provide top-notch training. It promises physical therapy, classrooms, and meeting spaces—everything young athletes need to nurture both their bodies and minds.
Is Karl-Anthony Towns Saving Dominican Youth or Building His Legacy?
Construction is set to begin next year, with a projected completion date in 2026. Towns’ vision is clear: bring the tools for success that American athletes often take for granted, to kids in the Dominican Republic. In his own words, Towns expressed the importance of sharing the wealth of resources available in the U.S. to a country that has, in his view, given him everything.
“I’ve been living the American dream, but it’s my mother’s eyes that remind me where I’m from,” said Towns, a four-time NBA All-Star. “This project is about giving those kids the best shot at life, not just in sports, but in everything they pursue.”
Towns’ mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, passed away in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications. She was his pillar, teaching him about faith, sacrifice, and hard work—values he’s now embedding in this facility. Towns is partnering with GO Ministries and World Youth Clubs to bring this dream to life. The emotional connection is undeniable: the facility will be built in the very country that gave him his mother and his love for basketball.
This isn’t Towns’ first act of patriotism for the Dominican Republic. He’s been representing the nation in international basketball since 2011, most recently at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. His performance, averaging 24.4 points over five games, underscored his unwavering dedication to his roots.
But Towns isn’t just thinking about basketball. His vision extends beyond the court. This complex will also include two soccer fields, four baseball diamonds, covered basketball and volleyball courts, and an educational facility. “It’s not just about making NBA stars,” he said, emphasizing that it’s a space for kids to grow life and social skills, as well as dedication to their passions.
Most importantly, this project reflects his mother’s teachings. “It’s a haven for kids with limited resources, a place where they can dream big,” Towns said. “Even if they don’t become professional athletes, they’ll learn valuable life skills.”
