The 2024 NBA Draft was billed as an enigma—no clear-cut No. 1 pick and a supposed lack of future superstars. Recently, Atlanta Hawks’ point guard Trae Young made headlines when he slams the 2024 Draft Class, and his remarks are causing quite a stir.
Hawks’ Trae Young Slams 2024 Draft Class—Should We Be Worried?
On “Podcast P” with Paul George, Young didn’t hold back. He questioned the hype surrounding this year’s rookie class, suggesting that many of these newly minted players might not evolve into game-changing stars. “No disrespect to the draftees, but from where I stand, a lot of them look like they’ll be role players,” Young stated candidly. He compared the current draft class unfavorably to recent top picks like Victor Wembanyama and Anthony Edwards, who have already made substantial impacts in the NBA.
Young’s skepticism is evident. He mentioned Reed Sheppard and Alex Sarr, two players who have drawn attention but still have a lot to prove. Sheppard, despite an impressive summer league performance, and Sarr, who struggled during the same period, are still seen as potential role players rather than future franchise pillars.
The Atlanta Hawks used their top draft pick on Zaccharie Risacher, who previously played for JL Bourg in France. Young acknowledged welcoming Risacher to the team but admitted he hasn’t yet shared the court with him. Meanwhile, Sarr, who was also in the running for the top spot, ended up with the Washington Wizards, and Sheppard joined the Houston Rockets.
This draft class has shown promise, with some notable performances over the past month. Yet, as Young pointed out, it’s still too early to judge their long-term impact. The real test will come next season and beyond as these rookies strive to prove themselves in the NBA.
