Giannis Antetokounmpo Criticizes the Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks find themselves in a different position than anticipated after acquiring Damian Lillard. Giannis Antetokounmpo criticizes the Bucks, despite expectations of dominance with one of the league’s premier scorers, the Bucks stand at 5-4 after nine games in the 2023-24 NBA season, with a recent 97-112 loss to the Orlando Magic. This defeat followed a game where they were edged out 124-126 by the Indiana Pacers, despite Giannis Antetokounmpo’s impressive 54-point performance.

Facing their first losing streak of the season, Giannis expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s defensive efforts.

“We need to step it up,” said Giannis. “This isn’t who we are. This isn’t the Milwaukee Bucks. We need to defend better.”

After conceding 126 points to the Indiana Pacers, the Bucks allowed 65 points in the first half to the Orlando Magic, a team averaging just 109.9 points per game this season. Falling behind early, the Bucks couldn’t recover, despite an improved defensive showing in the second half.

Acknowledging his role as the team leader, Giannis, who contributed 35 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals in the loss, emphasized the collective responsibility for better defense.

“But again, it’s not something one person can do alone. Defensively, we need to show more, make our paint look more crowded, and make the lanes look more crowded. Don’t allow guys to get comfortable and drive downhill,” Giannis stated.

Known for their strong defense in the past, the Giannis-led Bucks currently rank 25th in the league in defensive rating, allowing 116.5 points per 100 possessions. They also sit at 25th in points allowed per game with 119.3, a notable departure from their 4th rank in defensive rating last season.

Damian Lillard, absent in the losses to the Pacers and Magic due to a calf issue, has contributed significantly offensively this season, averaging 24.3 points per game. However, criticisms have arisen regarding his defensive performance, ranking 323rd among 445 qualified players in defensive rating.

While acknowledging Lillard’s offensive impact, Giannis recognizes the importance of a strong defensive foundation for long-term success, stating that their current defensive play won’t lead them far in the postseason.
