Former NBA Referee Calls Chris Paul 'One of the Biggest A--holes' While Defending Scott Foster

Officiating in the NBA is always a contentious topic, with opinions often voiced by players and coaches. However, it’s rare for referees to openly share their views on players. Recently, former NBA official Bill Spooner candidly discussed his experiences with Golden State Warriors point guard Chris Paul, who is known for his contentious relationship with veteran referee Scott Foster.

“I’m going to tell you, and I know you are recording me, but I get asked all the time: ‘Who are some of the tough guys, some of the bad guys?'” Spooner revealed this to The Athletic. “And when I tell them that Chris Paul, in my 32 years in the league, was one of the biggest assholes I ever dealt with, they say, ‘Not Rasheed Wallace, or da-da-da?’ Nope. Nothing like Paul.”

Spooner went on to address the common perception of Paul, stating, “And they are like, ‘Oh, he seems like such a nice guy.’ And I say, ‘Yeah, he’s a great image cultivator.'”

Chris Paul has not publicly commented on Spooner’s remarks, but his animosity towards Scott Foster is well-documented. Spooner noted that every era has its controversial referee, stating, “But guess what? They are the ones working the big games. Earl Strom, Jake O’Donnell, Joey Crawford—everybody hated those guys. Same with Scott. But if it’s a big game and the league wants somebody to run the game, Scott is going to be on it. Because he is a damn good referee.”

One of the more recent clashes between Paul and Foster occurred last November. In a game where the Warriors lost 123-115 to the Phoenix Suns, Foster ejected Paul in the second quarter after two quick technical fouls. Paul expressed his frustration post-game, saying, “It’s personal. The league knows, everybody knows, there’s been a meeting… I’m OK with a ref talking; just don’t use a tech to get your point across.”

Interestingly, Paul’s teammate, Draymond Green, has a contrasting view of Foster. On his show, The Draymond Green Show, Green called Foster one of his favorite officials, appreciating Foster’s clear boundaries during games. “Scott, I can say a few things, and he going to cut it off,” Green explained. “It’s not like I’m judging where the line is. Like, ‘Nope, this is the line, Draymond, and if you cross it, I’m texting you.'”

The perspectives on the Paul-Foster feud vary greatly. Green, who previously admitted to disliking Paul in 2020, noted that their relationship improved once Paul joined the Warriors. “If you’ve ever watched Chris compete, he’s kind of an asshole,” Green said. “He may say the same thing about me, and that’s OK. But he’s also one of the most competitive guys that I’ve played against over my 11 years in this league. I’m also an extremely competitive guy, and I’m not backing down from anyone. He’s not backing down from anyone.”

This dynamic illustrates how personal perspectives and professional rivalries shape opinions on and off the court, making the relationships in the NBA as complex as the game itself.
