San Antonio Spurs sensation Victor Wembanyama, the young French star who has taken the NBA by storm, poses an intriguing challenge for the league’s top defenders. Combining unprecedented size, agility, and skill, Wembanyama can dismantle defensive schemes effortlessly. However, retired NBA veteran and three-time Defensive Player of the Year, Dwight Howard, believes he could have outmatched Wembanyama if they had ever met on the court.

Dwight Howard, renowned for his dominance in the paint and his defensive prowess during his prime, had a stellar NBA career marked by fierce competition and remarkable athleticism. Throughout his tenure in the league, Howard was known for overpowering some of the toughest defenders and stymieing top-defender players. Yet, his career trajectory never intersected with that of  Wembanyama, who entered the NBA at the start of the current season while Howard now plays overseas.

Despite never facing off against Wembanyama, Howard is confident that he could have handled the young prodigy. During a recent appearance on The OGs Podcast, Howard laid out his strategy for dealing with Wembanyama:

“I would hit him in the chest, make his shoulders clap, game is over after that. All it took is two times. I’m telling you, boom boom boom, and he’s going to the ground, and then I got to deal with Pops. I’m busting Wemby up in the paint, what are you talking about?”

Howard’s self-assured comments underline his belief that his physicality and defensive skills would have neutralized Wembanyama’s impact. This bold claim, however, opens up an interesting debate about how the two players would fare against each other, considering Wembanyama’s own impressive defensive capabilities.

Wembanyama has quickly established himself as a formidable defender in the NBA. In his rookie season, he averaged an astonishing 4.81 ‘stocks’ (steals plus blocks) per game. This achievement hasn’t been seen since Ben Wallace’s performance in the 2001–02 season. Moreover, Wembanyama’s defensive skills earned him a spot as a Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) finalist, putting him in the spotlight as a defensive powerhouse.

Wembanyama’s ability to alter shots and his intimidating presence in the paint has earned him the respect of his peers. Throughout the season, highlights often showcased veteran players hesitating to drive to the basket when Wembanyama was on the court. This defensive intimidation factor underscores his potential to disrupt even the most seasoned offensive players.

Reflecting on Dwight Howard‘s comments and Wembanyama’s current trajectory, it’s evident that the NBA landscape has evolved. Howard’s era was characterized by raw physicality and dominance in the paint, while today’s game emphasizes versatility and skill across all positions. Wembanyama embodies this evolution, combining size with an unprecedented level of agility and skill.

Howard’s assertion underscores the confidence of past greats in their prime, but it also highlights the respect and recognition Wembanyama has garnered so early in his career. As we look forward, Wembanyama’s development will be fascinating to watch, particularly as he continues to redefine what is possible for players of his stature.
