Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic once again showcased his dominance in a Game 5 performance over Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert during Tuesday’s pivotal Game 5 second-round playoff clash. Jokic’s exceptional performance, scoring a game-high 40 points, along with seven rebounds and 13 assists on 68.2% shooting, was instrumental in the Nuggets’ decisive 112-97 victory. This win marked their third consecutive victory, granting them a crucial 3-2 series lead.

Jokic’s Game 5 performance brought to the fore the ongoing rivalry between Gobert and Golden State Warriors veteran forward Draymond Green. Green, who has been a long-time critic of Gobert, took the opportunity to mock Gobert’s defense during TNT’s halftime show, where he was a guest co-host. Green likened Gobert’s performance against Jokic to “barbecue chicken,” suggesting that Gobert was defenseless against the three-time MVP.

“Barbecue chicken is happening,” Green said. “Listen, this has been the matchup everybody wanted to see, DPOY vs. the MVP, and right now, Rudy Gobert doesn’t stand a chance.”

This harsh critique is part of a long-standing feud between Green and Gobert. Their rivalry dates back to 2019 when Green mocked Gobert for crying over an All-Star selection snub. Since then, Green has repeatedly questioned Gobert’s defensive prowess, and the two have often exchanged barbs both on and off the court. The rivalry reached a boiling point on November 14 during a regular-season altercation, where Green placed Gobert in a headlock, leading to Green’s five-game suspension.

Despite the recent intense criticism, Green’s remarks come on the heels of rare praise for Gobert’s defense. Following Minnesota’s sweep of the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs, Green had commended Gobert on his podcast, “The Draymond Green Show.” Green noted that Gobert’s defensive play had significantly improved.

“Rudy is actually not trash anymore,” Green stated. “He defends now. … When you see him on the switches, he’s up at the level. He’s not just sitting back in the drop no more. When he gets switched onto the guy, it’s like his antennas pop on. He’s actually impacting winning.”

However, Jokic’s recent dominance seems to have caused Green to revert to his previous critical stance. Green’s latest comments suggest a lack of faith in Gobert’s ability to handle elite offensive talents like Jokic. The consistent criticism from Green has put additional pressure on Gobert to prove his defensive capabilities under the playoff spotlight.

The upcoming Game 6 clash in Minnesota is now a must-win for the Timberwolves to avoid elimination. Gobert and his team must step up their defensive efforts to contain Jokic and keep their playoff hopes alive. If they fail, it is likely that Green and other critics will continue to question Gobert’s defensive acumen.

The ongoing feud between Green and Gobert, paired with the high stakes of the playoffs, has captured the attention of fans and analysts alike. Green’s willingness to publicly critique a fellow player adds a layer of drama to the series, heightening the anticipation for each game. As the Timberwolves face elimination, all eyes will be on Gobert to see if he can rise to the occasion and silence his detractors.
