Derrick White and the Boston Celtics have reached an agreement on a four-year, $125.9 million contract extension. This deal follows their NBA championship win last month, as reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. White, who had one year left on his previous contract worth $19.5 million, will now remain with the team through the 2028-29 season.

Breakdown of the Deal

ESPN’s Bobby Marks provided the financial specifics of White’s new contract:

  • 2025/26: $28.1 million
  • 2026/27: $30.4 million
  • 2027/28: $32.6 million
  • 2028/29: $34.8 million

The $125.9 million total includes likely bonuses and represents the maximum allowed under the current rules.

Journey to the Extension

The contract extension of Derrick White was anticipated after discussions with the Celtics in October 2023. Although they couldn’t finalize a deal before the season started, White remained committed to the team. “I love it here. It’s been great being here, being a Celtic,” he expressed in October. This commitment paid off, leading to renewed contract talks after their championship win.

White’s performance in the 2023-24 season significantly boosted his value. He averaged 15.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists, marking the most productive season of his career. His postseason performance was even more impressive, with averages of 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists, helping the Celtics secure their first title since 2008.

Future Prospects

White’s role with the Celtics has evolved since his trade from the San Antonio Spurs in February 2022. Initially expected to fill the starting point guard role after Marcus Smart’s departure, White adapted to the starting shooting guard position following the acquisition of Jrue Holiday. His versatility and consistent performance make him a crucial asset for the Celtics.

As the Celtics aim to defend their title, White’s new contract ensures that he will be a key player in their quest for back-to-back championships. His leadership and skill on the court will be instrumental in Boston’s continued success.
