The Golden State Warriors had a successful offseason, but departure of Klay Thompson signifies the end of a significant period. After spending 13 years with the team, Thompson departed for a squad with better chances of winning championships, creating a significant void both on and off the basketball court.

More Than Just a Shooter

Thompson, who is one of the famous Splash Brothers, was recognized for his precise shooting from beyond the arc. Yet, as noted by ex-teammate Festus Ezeli, it is Thompson’s personal side that will be most missed. Even after experiencing two significant injuries that kept him out of action for two years, Thompson remained dedicated and continued to put in the effort. He willingly came off the bench without being asked and never sought attention, always prioritizing the team.

Ezeli characterized Thompson as being easy to care for, and despite his fall from being an All-Star, Klay still gave back in a humble way. His efficiency and team-first mentality are demonstrated by his famous 60-point game, in which he only dribbled 11 times.

A Player to Remember

The head coach of the Warriors, Steve Kerr, highly praised Thompson for his commitment, remembering when Klay almost put his career in jeopardy by attempting to continue playing with a torn ACL during the 2019 NBA Finals. Kerr lauded Thompson for more than just his remarkable successes, such as winning four NBA titles. He also commended their close bond and the memories they created together.

Although many veteran players leave a team on bad terms, departure of Thompson was bittersweet. His modesty and commitment had a lasting influence on the Warriors. So his absence was as much about the individual as the athlete.

Klay Thompson will always be honored by the Warriors for more than just his shooting skills. His dedication to the team and humble attitude towards the game are also noteworthy.
