Countdown to Tip-Off: Maine Women’s Basketball Gears Up for a New Season

The University of Maine women’s basketball team, reigning champions of the America East Conference, is just days away from starting a new season. Today, the Black Bears held an open media practice, giving a glimpse of the preparations for their first game next week.

While the team retains many of last year’s key players, this season brings fresh challenges. After Adrianna Smith suffered a season-ending injury and with the graduation of standout Anne Simon, Maine faces the tough task of replacing 40 points and 20 rebounds per game.

Despite being voted first in the preseason conference poll, the Black Bears recognize the need to prove themselves again. Head Coach Amy Vachon spoke candidly about the team’s drive to rebuild: “We were picked number one when Adi was still in the lineup, but Adi is not in the lineup anymore. With those 40 points and 20 rebounds gone, I don’t think anyone on the team assumes success will come easily. We have a lot of work to do, and it starts every day in practice, starting Monday.”

Graduate student forward Caroline Bornemann echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the team’s focus on the present season. “Of course, we’re thrilled about last year’s victory, but that’s in the past. Each season is a fresh start for us.”

The Black Bears will launch their season at home against La Salle on Monday morning, marking the first time since 2019 that they’ll tip off the season on their home court.
