Controversial Timeout Call Propels Lakers to In-Season Tournament Semifinals Amid Scrutiny
The controversial timeout call during the Lakers’ clash against the Phoenix Suns in the In-Season Tournament quarterfinals has raised eyebrows. Despite the Lakers ultimately clinching a 106-103 victory and advancing to the semifinals in Las Vegas, the game was marred by a contentious moment.
With a narrow 105-103 lead and only 11 seconds remaining, the Lakers were in a commanding position. However, chaos ensued when Austin Reaves lost possession, seemingly allowing the Suns to level or even secure a win. LeBron James intervened, calling for a timeout, but controversy arose as Reaves didn’t appear to have control of the ball at the moment James signaled for the timeout.
Post-game, crew chief Josh Tiven defended the call, citing that during live play, officials deemed the Lakers to still have possession when James requested the timeout. Despite scrutiny and video reviews showing a loose ball when the timeout was called, Tiven highlighted Reaves’ left hand on the ball against his leg as a sign of control, supporting their decision.
This contentious decision altered the game’s trajectory. Instead of a potential tie from Grayson Allen, the Lakers secured the timeout, gaining another opportunity to inbound. Anthony Davis was fouled, scoring a free throw and missing the second. However, the Suns’ attempt to equalize with a 3-point shot fell short, securing the Lakers’ victory.
The Lakers now move forward to face the New Orleans Pelicans in Las Vegas, eyeing a chance at the championship game and an additional $500,000 for each player. Conversely, the Suns, feeling the sting of the controversial call, will face the Sacramento Kings on Friday, missing out on the opportunity to vie for the tournament’s grand prize.
