Negotiations for a contract extension between Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors are currently at a significant distance. According to ESPN’s Shams Charnia, there has been no agreement reached yet, and negotiations may continue during the season or even during restricted free agency. The Warriors must present Kuminga with a rookie-scale contract extension by Monday.
Moses Moody’s Chances Look Better
Although Kuminga’s agreement is still up in the air, there is increased hope for a possible contract extension for shooting guard Moses Moody. It is said that the Warriors are inclined to come to a deal with the 22-year-old before the deadline.
Kuminga’s Growing Role with Golden State
Chosen as the 7th overall draft pick in the 2021 NBA draft, Kuminga has progressively expanded his role within the Warriors‘ roster. In the previous season, he played an average of 26.3 minutes per game, starting in 46 of the 74 games. At the beginning, he averaged 17.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 53.1% from the field.
Future Remains Uncertain
Should the Warriors fail to reach a long-term agreement with Kuminga before Monday. He will start the 2024-25 season in the last year of his rookie deal. Golden State can still retain him. By matching any offers he receives as a restricted free agent next season, even if a new deal isn’t reached.
Warriors Hesitant on Max Offer
Sources have stated that Kuminga’s team originally requested a maximum extension. Yet, insiders such as Anthony Slater have observed that the Warriors are hesitant to agree to a five-year contract for the youthful forward. Both parties will have to make considerable advancements in the upcoming days. In order to achieve a consensus before the deadline.
