In a surprising pregame ceremony honoring past Shelby Whippets girls basketball alumni, Emma (Hostetler) Ervin learned that her No. 24 jersey would be retired, marking a historic moment as only the third girls basketball player and fourth overall to receive this esteemed recognition.
Jersey Choice: A Serendipitous Journey
Ervin’s connection with the No. 24 jersey was unexpected. As a freshman, she initially wore No. 20, but a subsequent choice led her to No. 24, a decision that gained profound significance, especially considering her growing admiration for basketball icon Kobe Bryant.
Historic Accomplishments Etched in Stats
Playing for the Whippets from 2009-2013, Ervin left an indelible mark, becoming the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,602 points and the all-time assists leader with 527. Her statistical achievements include the best career free-throw percentage at 79.1%, a record-setting 26 consecutive free throws made, and being the 3-point record holder with 142.
Sharing Space with Legends
Ervin’s honor aligns her with basketball legends Jodi Roth-Korbas and Angie Sherk, along with boys basketball icon Larry Siegfried, all of whom have their jerseys retired. Ervin’s No. 24 will be showcased in the trophy case at Shelby High School, an exclusive space shared with these revered jerseys.
Humble Recognition and Surprise
Expressing her humility, Ervin shared her surprise at receiving such an honor. “It is the biggest honor I have ever received. I never in a million years could have pictured this happening when I started playing. It means everything.”
Coach’s Pride in Recognition
Shelby Whippets’ coach, Natalie Lantz, expressed her pride in honoring Ervin, emphasizing the significance of the recognition. “It was due time. She is peppered all over our career, season, and team record books, and she most certainly deserves recognition for everything she has done for this program.”
Preserving Legacy: No. 24 Out of Circulation
While Ervin’s No. 24 won’t be officially retired, her jerseys will be taken out of circulation, ensuring they are never worn again. This decision reflects a commitment to preserving the legacy attached to the number.
Challenging Future Players
Lantz sees Ervin’s No. 24 as a challenge for future players, stating, “The No. 24 will be very important in our program, and whoever wears that will have a huge responsibility.” Ervin, in her mentor role, aims to pass on the program’s love and inspire future players.
As her No. 24 ascends to the trophy case, it stands not just as a symbol of her accomplishments but as a beacon for aspiring athletes to follow in her dedicated footsteps.
