San Antonio Spurs guard Chris Paul is expanding his television network, PlayersTV, through a new agreement with DIRECTV. This deal will significantly increase the network’s reach, bringing its unique content to millions of new viewers.
The First Athlete and Fan-Owned Media Network
PlayersTV stands out as the first-ever Athlete and Fan-Owned Media Network. It is backed by over 2,100 fan investors/shareholders and more than 70 athlete owners, including prominent figures such as Damian Lillard, Travis Kelce, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Vernon Davis, and Kyrie Irving. The network offers a 24/7 channel featuring reality shows, comedies, documentaries, and more, now accessible to DIRECTV via the Internet and DIRECTV STREAM customers.
Expanding Sports Media Horizons
The network aims to set new standards in sports media by leveraging elite athlete-owners and industry-leading partnerships. Linda Burakoff, DIRECTV’s senior vice president of content and programming, emphasized the network’s ability to offer diverse genres and explore various interests in greater depth.
Diverse Premium Content
PlayersTV provides fans with an inside look into the lives of their favorite athletes through a variety of premium content. The channel is also available on other major platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, YouTube TV, Fubo, Vizio, and FireTV.
Chris Paul’s Vision
Chris Paul, one of the world’s most well-known athletes with endorsements from major brands like Nike, Panini, Spalding, State Farm, and Tissot, reflects on the growth of PlayersTV. “Starting PlayersTV was about players having ownership,” Paul said. He emphasized his commitment to evolving the role of athletes and their involvement in media.
Future Ambitions in Ownership
Looking ahead, Paul is interested in owning a team in the WNBA or NBA after his playing career ends. “Charlotte is definitely home, but I’m open. Especially if there’s an expansion team or something like that,” Paul shared. With his extensive experience in the league, understanding of the game, and knowledge of various aspects of the NBA, Paul aims to achieve this goal.
Paul acknowledges that while he is nearing 40, there is still much life to live beyond basketball. His involvement in PlayersTV and aspirations for team ownership reflect his dedication to staying connected to the sport and making a lasting impact.
