In a commanding display of defensive prowess, the Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks 107-89 in Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Finals on Thursday night. The Celtics’ defensive strategy, orchestrated by Jrue Holiday, effectively neutralized the Mavericks’ star backcourt duo, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, limiting their playmaking and scoring abilities.

The Celtics’ defense was the highlight of the game, with Jrue Holiday leading the charge. Holiday’s efforts were instrumental in restricting Luka Doncic, who recorded a postseason career low of one assist, and Kyrie Irving, who had one of his worst playoff performances with just 12 points on 6-of-19 shooting, including 0-for-5 from three-point range. The Celtics’ versatile defense managed to disrupt the Mavericks’ offensive rhythm, causing Doncic and Irving to struggle significantly.

“I think it helps a lot, throwing different guys at him,” Holiday said after the game, referring to the Celtics’ strategy against Doncic. “Different guys play defense differently. Some aggressive, some not, but I think even our white guys guard.”

Holiday’s comments, while addressing the effectiveness of players like Sam Hauser and Payton Pritchard, also touched on common stereotypes regarding white players in the NBA. Despite not being the primary on-ball defenders, Hauser and Pritchard held their own when matched up against Doncic, contributing to the Celtics’ defensive success.

One of the key moments highlighted by Holiday involved Payton Pritchard creating a steal for Derrick White by preventing Doncic from driving easily. This type of team effort and defensive cohesion were critical to Boston’s ability to stymie the Mavericks’ offense.

Holiday’s defensive assignment primarily focused on Kyrie Irving, and he executed it flawlessly. Irving, known for his scoring prowess and clutch performances, was rendered ineffective throughout the game. Holiday’s relentless defense ensured that Irving had little room to maneuver and was unable to find his rhythm, which proved to be a decisive factor in the Celtics’ victory.

“Me and Ky know each other… We do know the skill that Kyrie has,” Holiday remarked. “I think I’m trying to show him respect as well as him knowing that I’m going to be a competitor.”

While the Celtics thrived on defense, the Mavericks faced numerous challenges. Luka Doncic, despite his 30 points and 10 rebounds, was left without significant support from his teammates. The Mavericks’ shooting woes were evident as they managed only 7-of-27 from beyond the arc (25.9%), compared to the Celtics’ 16-of-42 (38.1%). This 27-point disparity in three-point shooting further highlighted Dallas’ struggles.

Doncic’s lack of assists also underscored the effectiveness of Boston’s defense in cutting off his passing lanes and disrupting the Mavericks’ pick-and-roll plays. With Irving unable to provide his usual offensive spark, the Mavericks’ offense appeared disjointed and ineffective.

As the series progresses, the Mavericks will need to make significant adjustments to counter the Celtics’ defensive strategies. Head coach Jason Kidd remained optimistic despite the heavy loss, praising the efforts of his players and expressing confidence in their ability to bounce back.

“They did great,” Kidd said about his team’s first-time finals players. “They did great, and they’ll get better as the series goes on.”

The Mavericks have shown resilience in previous playoff series, often rebounding from Game 1 losses. They have not lost back-to-back games in this year’s playoffs, and they will need to draw on this resilience as they prepare for Game 2 on Sunday at the TD Garden in Boston.

The Celtics’ defensive performance in Game 1 serves as a textbook example of how versatile and disciplined defense can stifle even the most potent offenses. Jrue Holiday’s leadership and the collective effort of players like Hauser and Pritchard demonstrate that effective defense relies on teamwork and adaptability. On the other hand, the Mavericks’ struggles highlight the importance of secondary scoring and the need for all players to contribute in high-stakes games. As the series continues, the strategic adjustments made by both teams will be crucial in determining the outcome. The resilience of Dallas and the defensive prowess of Boston set the stage for an exciting and closely contested NBA Finals.
