Iowa Hawkeyes’ standout guard Caitlin Clark finds herself at the centre of controversy after recreating an iconic photo of Kobe Bryant’s championship moment. The recreation took place following Clark’s remarkable 34-point performance that propelled her team to a third consecutive Big Ten conference championship on Sunday.
Despite her stellar on-court performance, the decision to recreate Bryant’s memorable pose drew significant criticism and negativity towards Clark. Many NBA and NCAA enthusiasts expressed displeasure, suggesting that such homage should only be paid after achieving the ultimate feat of winning a national championship.
Clarifying the circumstances surrounding the recreation, it was revealed that Clark did not initiate the idea. Rather, freelance photographer Bri Lewerke proposed the concept, which Clark simply agreed to.
The backlash comes amid Clark’s pursuit of collegiate success, particularly after her team’s defeat in the national title game against the LSU Tigers last year. With Caitlin Clark poised to transition to the WNBA next season, the current campaign represents her final opportunity to secure a championship for the Hawkeyes.
Despite the controversy surrounding the recreation, Clark demonstrated her exceptional skills on the court during Iowa’s thrilling victory over Nebraska, prevailing 94-89 in overtime. In a remarkable second-half performance, Clark rebounded from a challenging first half, where she failed to convert any of her nine attempts from beyond the arc, to erupt for 30 points, including five three-pointers, leading her team to victory and clinching the coveted conference title for the third consecutive year. Nonetheless, the celebratory day was not devoid of its challenges and criticisms.
