According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, the Brooklyn Nets are obtaining experienced guard Shake Milton in a sign-and-trade agreement with the New York Knicks. Milton is set to ink a $9 million deal over three years, with the 2024-25 season as the sole guaranteed year.

Trade Context and Details

This agreement is a component of a more extensive deal where the Knicks exchange Mikal Bridges for Bojan Bogdanović and multiple NBA draft selections. The Knicks attempted to enlarge the Bridges deal in order to prevent hitting a hard cap near the first apron, per Fred Katz of The Athletic. By adding Milton to the trade, the Knicks were able to equalize the salary difference between Bridges and Bogdanović for the 2024-25 season, aiding in their ability to work around salary cap limitations.

Milton’s Role and Performance

Milton, obtained midway through the season from the Detroit Pistons, had few opportunities to play for the Knicks in the previous season. During the regular season, he played an average of 4.5 minutes per game and increased to 5.5 minutes in four playoff games, scoring a total of 16 points. Although his role was small, Milton was essential in bridging the salary gap for the Bridges trade.

Trade Outcomes

The sign-and-trade deal sends Shake Milton to Brooklyn Nets and also assists the Knicks in effectively managing their salary cap. Together with Milton, the Nets will also bring in Bojan Bogdanović, Mamadi Diakite, and multiple draft selections, such as four first-round picks without protection from 2025 to 2031, a protected first-round pick in 2025, a 2025 second-round pick, and an unprotected pick swap in 2028.

Knicks’ Additional Acquisitions

Along with Bridges, the Knicks will also get veteran forward Keita Bates-Diop. They succeeded in keeping backup guard Miles McBride on the team, who scored 8.3 points per game in the last season and boosted his output to 11.0 points per game in the playoffs. McBride, who still has three years left on his contract extension, will remain an essential member of the Knicks’ bench as they seek to progress deeper in the playoffs next year.

Strategic Moves for Both Teams

This trade showcases strategic decisions made by both the Nets and the Knicks. The Nets strengthen their team with seasoned players and important draft selections, positioning themselves for forthcoming triumph. In the meantime, the Knicks effectively handle their salary cap and bring in important players to enhance their roster for the upcoming season.
